MENSWEAR S/S.2014: Raf Simons

26.6.13

I know we've been doing this cute little blip of a post for the shows but I just about died, so we we need to go into detailed conversation. LET'S TALK.

    1.
Oh my god. This SET? Like Tomorrowland INNOVENTIONS REALITIES, MY HOME REALIZED. THE FUTURE. I want to live there and I want to hang Calder mobiles everywhere. Above the stove I will never use, above the toaster oven I will use heavily and above the baby crib I'm going to get just so I can put another mobile over it.
    2.
Should I put this under a READ MORE? Nah, nevermind.

DANIEL: The first look is up.
DANIEL: is that

Foamy Prada polo dresses for boys and really disgusting Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century boots, loves it.

The sequel to this.

Let's take a moment to appreciate these graphics. Guys are artificially flavored.

Last season, Bugs Bunny and Road Runner. This season, the Rowdyruff boys dressed up by the Powerpuff Girls.

DANIEL: these look like your middle school binders and folders
IRIS: oh my god

MENSWEAR SPRING/SUMMER 2014:                                                                                   Z ZEGNA
This color palette ranged from navy to white with enough surprise to not bore me to death at 4am when I watch these live streams. Those chalky pastels and mustards! These proportions looked really comfy and I want to switch out my whole wardrobe for this. So fresh so clean. I love clutches but the rolled up bags looked kinda  pointless. Like what are you putting in that, dude.

Mixed up lengths. Summa layers. Slouchy pants. Baggy jackets. The backwards-shirt-turned-turtlenecks at the beginning were VITAL. Sandals. SANDALS!

MENSWEAR SPRING/SUMMER 2014:                                                                                   PRADA
I hear children laughing and running around. Are we going to see children? I’d wear Prada junior label, I think. Is it about dads? Oh my god, it’s about dads. Tommy Bahama prints, save me from this Pearl Harbor disaster hero boys. Playing dress up, watching the Lion King. It was kinda ugly, but like this is totally not my scene. Miuccia's in her kooky vintage zone, bringin' back SS12.

It’s a smart collection because young dudes love looking like thrift store grandpas and grandpas already wear this. So, like all bases covered. I was getting a lot of Karate Kid from this, were you getting Karate Kid? We’re really into the layering and black slouchy looks. The sweaty glistening skin was the best part, new beauty routine.

MENSWEAR S/S.2014: Jil Sander

Weak chic geek tech douche in shiny jackets and the prettiest pink-coral for Spring. I feel like he'd wear Google glass and I can hang with that. Iris is in love with the high waters and black socks, I'm digging the floaty shorts and loose coats more. Runway shots lost the detail, but track pants stripes going down suits jackets and trousers were A+. Check it. Favorite moments: confusing beatbox soundtrack + a full blown altercation of runway mishaps with bumping models.

IRIS above

I don't wear as much color anymore other than black and if I do wear color its typically gray, white, blue, and mustard. I realized I only wear those colors, after purging my closet this year. I became obsessed with androgynous all black outfits and began to strip down all accessories because I didn't like the feeling of having too much stuff on. I'm even thinking about eliminating purses out of my life and just keep everything in my pocket or wallet. I also started to experiment with eye make up and have been wanting eyeshadows/eyeliners of all colors; my favorites have been orange, blue, and white but I'm excited to try more next year.

DANIEL below

I completely changed purchasing habits this year and I hope that the quality over quantity approach continues through next year. I threw out half my closet because I've been such a hoarder and it was kinda awesome not having the remnants of $5 sales on lamé leggings and bedazzled shirts still in there from four years ago oh my god. (I don't want to talk about it.) Basically this year was narrowing down my closet to what I know I'll actually use. No prints, more black, substantial fabrics, and clothes that hovered instead of clung to the body proved to be the most important requirements for my style this year, and probably next.

From V78 The Youthquake Issue. The image above, and the editorial it's part of, has been haunting me since I've seen it. The styling juxtaposes incredibly textural pieces with simple, basic school sweatshirts and sports uniforms. The voluminous shape of the already oversized clothing looks supernatural on regular school kids, half the size of an amazonian height model. The mixture is really inspiring.

Photographer Focus: Willy Vanderperre

26.7.12

A large part of what we find interesting and thought provoking in fashion can be attributed to editorial photography and we've done a couple of editorial spotlights now and then on this blog, but we wanted to expand that interest into something a bit deeper and focus on some of our favorite photographers.  (Our tumblr is basically an editorial graveyard.) For this inaugural post, we're featuring a photographer whose work inspires us endlessly, Willy Vanderperre. Hailing from Belgium, he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. His theatrical Caravaggio-esque use of lighting and dramatic, emotional take on color and the body. is what mainly draws us to his work. While his images are often—but not always—minimal, there's a stark statement-making style about them. Always strong, even when quiet. It also helps that his frequent collaborators are  some of our favorites in the fashion industry: designer Raf Simons, stylists Olivier Rizzo and Panos Yiapanis,  makeup artist Peter Phillips, and models Natasha Poly, Mariacarla Boscono and Clement Chabernaud. His  photographs' gritty intimate drama appears in major fashion publications such as Self Service, i-D, L'Uomo Vogue, Arena Homme Plus, V, among others and has captured the campaigns of Jil Sander, Prada, and Dior Homme. ■

Menswear Spring/Summer 2013

11.7.12

Dresses for men?! There are stranger things. Sure, you can call it a “tunic” but this new silhouette is sweeping fashion and changing up the options in menswear fast. We won’t get into how men had worn dresses for centuries and how French aristocracy wore heels and extravagant wigs, because that’s not going to be relevant to the modern man. It’s an argument that’s moot against the contemporary one that fashion designers today are pushing.

Now, more than ever, can men be stylish in a much more varied way that doesn’t go the stereotypical ways of traditional stuffy suit or inauthentic Mall-trend punk. Next Spring, the blending of gender in men’s fashion rises above the rest in changing hemlines and offering a new view of what menswear can be.

In a week all about his next move, Raf Simons showed a menswear collection that had everyone on the edge of their seats. After an influential show for Autumn/Winter (hello shorts trend!), the Belgian designer showed his menswear collection in the frenzy of anticipation that was pre-Dior Haute Couture. Doing what he does best, Raf exemplified his entire brand and all of his contributions to menswear. There were shorts and sneakers, there were Pepto pinks and sorbet oranges, art-influenced prints, and an effortless melding of youth and forwardness.

The overarching main idea here though was the dichotomy of masculine and feminine. A mixture and play on genders, almost the past and the future meeting in the middle (read: right now). The double-sided ideas came to life in the form of mullet-coats that walked into the runway as refined traditional tailoring in the front and trailed away with bursts of prairie floral dresses in the back.

It is a theme that Raf obviously finds important right now, the melding of opposites, conjoining the old and new. For his Dior Haute Couture debut, it came through in mid-century Mr. Dior embroidered gowns slashed off at the hips and worn with a pair of minimal, refined cropped trousers. Back at menswear, the printed dress didn’t stop at the back of coats though. Contributing to one of the most unexpected trends of menswear, an important look was a Brian Calvin painting blown up onto tunic t-shirts worn over slit short shorts that had the effect of a thigh-grazing dress worn underneath a powdery pink coat. Short and sweet, to make a point.

Furthering the sweetness, J.W. Anderson showed at London’s first menswear fashion week with a collection inspired by boys who love their mothers. One of our favorite new designers, Anderson’s take on menswear is a unique one that basically ignores any of the typical menswear conventions. He showed lycra flared pants with matching tops in the best of weirdest colors; robin’s egg, lavender, rust. The look is intense, but not unimaginable or unwearable. Coats had equal amounts of brightness in reds and that Raf-beloved pale pink.

Metallic full-lace outfits (Marc Jacobs, get in these now!) in black, white, and blue also joined in the mix. The colors of the lace remind us of a bruise. The effect? A weirdly diseased floral pattern hovering lightly over the skin, and oh so covetable. It’s as conceptual as COMME des GARÇONS and as cool as the Proenzas of New York. J.W. Anderson says he wants to affect menswear, even if his contribution is but one change in the mass-view on men’s clothes. His forward moving ideas and utter lack of fear to execute them well makes him poised to meet that goal.

If converting the most people to this melding of womenswear and menswear trend were a competition, Givenchy would probably be the reigning messiah. Riccardo Tisci’s work at Givenchy is nothing short of religious, and we’re not talking about the Madonna prints (though we will talk that later). Tisci’s amassing of fashion disciples toward his gothic-romanticism and free interpretation on gender has star power on its side, something Hubert de Givenchy and a certain Hepburn have in common. Though the celebrity-supported brand makes the kilt look cool and the goth go glam, the design holds up against all of that hype.

For Spring/Summer 2013 the ubiquitous graphic that goes trending ‘round the world went back to Tisci’s roots for inspiration. With haunting faces of the Mother of Christ printed on multiple layers of sheer transparencies, the prints became more subtle. It felt like a refining period for Tisci, a closing of his print-heavy chapter and a focus on color and silhouette. The color here, that powder pink makes an appearance again. It gave softness to a severely structured look. Skirts and dresses layered over trousers, double-breasted suit jackets over top.

The lightness felt holy, but the sheeny thick fabrics grounded the look. That’s something that makes sense to us, and how it psychologically justifies the risk taking in men’s fashion right now. The designers pioneering this androgynous look express a design sensibility that floats above mere mortals’ heads but grounds itself in just the right way to make it accessible to wear. Stairway to fashion heaven.

Equally romantic and spiritual is the work of designer, Rick Owens, whose menswear collection for Spring 2013 took inspiration from his wife, Michele Lamy. The models clomped out in clogs, like the ones she wears; dressed in knee length draped dresses in the usual Rick Owens blackened grays and desert taupes. The look has become a hallmark for Owens and his brand is easily recognizable.

There’s a softness to the clothes, but strength is not compromised. While that may seem like a cautionary choice to get men to wear these clothes, the Rick Owens customer doesn’t need convincing. The silent strength and slim silhouetted lightness of this collection were overtly feminine in the way that they respected the woman for which they were inspired by. It is important to note that to create menswear in the vein of womenswear, the designer must have a tremendous amount of respect and love for women. The strength comes from a place more maternal than macho and is essentially, why this trend is so powerful.

Equality creating quality fashion is a sentiment that Miuccia Prada also shares. For her menswear collection, she made a statement with models, as per usual. Sending out men of all ages from sixteen to sixty and some top model girls sprinkled throughout, the Prada show was about sameness. While it could arguably construe as monotony, Miuccia argues equality and all the fashion supported that. Every model walked out in extremely similar, minimal clothing with an athletic vibe that gave a 2013 lens to a 90s interpretation of the 1970s, a Prada staple.

While what Prada showed wasn’t incredibly unimaginable on the street, the internet can deliver us hilarious comments about how wacky, weird, and “out of the norm” this fashion is. There is a lot to say about the Prada collection. Going positive and calling it refined and minimal, a definite yes. Going negative and saying a bore and a snore, sure. But totally out there and insane? A little far reaching. Still, that’s something to consider when talking about men’s fashion. Normal, everyday men are probably not going to start wearing this in Spring/Summer 2013 just because Raf or Miuccia told them to.

Nevertheless, they will probably start accepting the look years from now when fashion has moved on to something different. Think about men and the slim fit pant. In the early 2000s, probably nobody would be caught dead in that “too feminine” silhouette but now the skinny jean is widespread and widely accepted. The early 2000s is when that slim pant was introduced and important in modern menswear, Hedi Slimane leading it into popularity during his time at Dior Homme from 2000 to 2007.

Thinking about that slow and gradual change gives us hope for this trend to catch on and move menswear into a different direction, somewhere new and exciting. Menswear has the ability to grow and the interesting concepts that designers are introducing into their work exemplifies that fashion is taking advantage of that. Our advice for guys? Go buy a dress, you’ll be way ahead of the curve.

Editorial Spotlight: Under the Influence 10th Edition

27.5.12

We haven't had an editorial spotlight since last Fall, so this is way overdue. Under the Influence Magazine contacted us with some great images from their 10th issue, so we decided to get back into the swing of things with this post! Go check out their website because they are seriously amazing, all of the fashion images are exceptional and we constantly look to UTI for inspiration for this blog. We, regrettably, don't own any actual copies so it's our pleasure to publish some of the high quality images on our blog. Below are three editorials from the latest issue of Under the Influence along with our thoughts.

FASHION FADES, ONLY STYLE REMAIN THE STYLE
BY
NIK HARTLEY

Models / Emma Wahlberg and Milly Simmonds
Styling / Margaret Crow
The editorial featured on the cover of Under the Influence puts the emphasis on a riff off the classics, showcasing the interesting Givenchy or Jil by Raf take on the collared shirt, tank dress, sweater, or suit. Plus, we're weak for 60s makeup.

NUCLEAR FAMILY
BY
GRETA ILIEVA

Model / Dempsey Stewart
Styling / Jack Borkett

The stark harshness and shadows of this editorial are beautiful. Gritty, clean, honest and minimal Juergen Teller-esque photography gives an 80s video girl styling a retro-futuristic 60s/70s vibe.

JUGENDSTIL
BY
ERIC NEHR

Models / Adrien Sahores and Thomas Bukovatz
Styling / Serge Girardi

Featuring one of our favorite models, Adrien Sahores (left), this editorial is up there in one of the best we've seen this year. The extremely inspiring mixture of paint, photography, and fashion puts menswear in such a strange, new context.

Unrealistic Wants N°2: Spring Cleaning

14.4.12

DANIEL'S UNREALISTIC WANTS

1. Jil Sander Python Print T-Shirt
The Spring Jil Sander show was a favorite of mine. The artificial looking bright colored python everywhere is all sorts of early 2000s tacky and amazing, but obviously in Raf's can't-help-but-be-cool way.

2. Maison Martin Margiela Flame Shirt
Another printed t-shirt, which is odd because I'm not usually a big fan of prints but these are just so good! This Flame Margiela shirt is amazing, love the weirdly angled sleeves on this too.

3. Dior Homme Cotton-Viscose Jacket
I love the slightly monastic/industrial vibe this Dior Homme jacket has. White is also my favorite color to wear right now, this would go perfectly with basically anything.

4. Jil Sander Half-Moon Brooches
I'm not completely sure how I'd wear these, but the multicolor iridescence of these jeweled brooches have me wanting to clip them to everything.

5. Maison Martin Margiela Mesh Boots
Literally the most perfect shoes to ever walk the earth. Someone make a mens' version, now.

IRIS' UNREALISTIC WANTS

1. Miu Miu Tulip-Hem Coat
I love the A-line shape and tulip hem of the coat. There's a dark blue version of it that I sort of like more but couldn't find images of, this pink version is still really pretty though.

2. Dries Van Noten Floral Button-Down
This floral shirt is cool because instead of an average floral, it's got flowers that look like they've been Photoshop cut up and displaced all over the shirt. All of the Dries prints this season are flawless.

3. Carven Lace Dress
I've been wanting another lace dress that isn't white, even though those are my favorite kind of dresses. What's not to like about this Carven red lace dress? It's got everything I like: a high neckline, sleeves, pleats, and a short hemline.

4. Acne Rita Leather Jacket
This is the most flawless leather jacket that my eyes have ever seen and NOTHING ELSE MATTERS.

5. Charles Anastase Striped Shirt Dress
I can never find any nice shirt dresses but this one is perfect and I love the gathered skirt at the waist. I imagine wearing a petticoat underneath so I can be a maid princess with an apron!

New Year Style Resolutions 2012

28.12.11

Daniel's New Year Style Resolutions
1. Wear more black and white, mostly white
2. Turtlenecks are the new collar
3. Era inspirations: 60s, 70s, 90s
→ 60s stark color and shape, 70s glamour and loose silhouette, and 90s athleticism
4. Fashion Bipolarism: casual minimalism vs. dynamic futurism
5.
Focus on silhouette, solid color, and fabrics
6. Go for shock through unconventional materials, shine, and glitter
Favorite Designers in 2011:
Dior Homme by Kris Van Assche, Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci, Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquiere, Jil Sander by Raf Simons, Calvin Klein Men by Italo Zucchelli, Celine by Phoebe Philo, Prada by Miuccia Prada, Maison Martin Margiela

How has your style changed in 2011? Did you keep your 2011 style resolutions?
I'm blonde, I feel like that's an important change to my style. I've been wearing way more black and white, eradicating other neutrals slowly. Overall, I've gone more minimal and also monochromatic taking patterns out of my wardrobe. Lace and other overtly feminine fabrics have faded in favor for menswear inspired women's pieces (oh the irony). I got most of the stuff on my wishlist but instead of going more intricate and embellished, my style got simpler and more refined.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Iris' New Year Style Resolutions
1. Wear eyeliner + mascara
2. Wear more necklaces and earrings
3. Era inspirations: 50s, 60s, 90s
4. Fashion Mixture: 60s school girl with boyish elements
5.
Focus on brighter colors, patterns, fabrics, and shapes
→ Prints inspired by Marni and Dries Van Noten, richer fabrics like wool, velvet, and thick knits
Favorite Designers in 2011:
Carven by Guillaume Henry, Celine by Phoebe Philo, Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci, Dries van Noten, Jason Wu, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Proenza Schouler, Jil Sander by Raf Simons, Marni by Consuelo Castiglioni, Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquiere, Christoper Kane, Burberry by Christoper Bailey

How has your style changed in 2011? Did you keep your 2011 style resolutions?
I don't wear longer lengths or poofy skirts anymore. I used to wear them all the time, but I have switched over to shorter, stiffer a-lined skirts. I recently got back into wearing patterns and brighter color after awhile of not really wearing them. Nowadays, I mostly wear pops of colors instead of color overloads.  I love short hair now after cutting my hair short twice this year. I also tried to accessorize more, using necklaces and earrings. I think I achieved everything on my 2010 New Year's Style Resolutions for 2011. I said I wanted to wear hats everyday and I just got into doing that last month, better late than never!

Iris & Daniel's Unrealistic Wants

19.12.11

Daniel's Unrealistic Wants

1. Givenchy Backpack
I'm in need for a cooler backpack since my laptop doesn't fit into any of my other bags. My sister's old Jansport that I've been using is just not cutting it, this minimal Givenchy one is amazing.

2. Christopher Kane Clutch

Plastic, 90s, and weird science experiment-gone-fashion is definitely working for me.

3. Prada Lurex Sweaters

Lurex can go bad easily, fortunately these sweaters are doing the opposite. Obsessed with the emerald shade of the glitter in the mock neck and v-neck combo.

4. Philip Treacy hats for Armani Privé
This hat is like an egg mixed with a UFO, and I love it. Aside from Haute Couture being out of my budget, I've got no where to wear it to, but when has that stopped anyone?

5. Maison Martin Margiela Sneakers

In a similar sci-fi futurist vein, these sneakers remind me of Boccioni's Unique Forms of Continuity in Space, but for feet obviously.

________________

Iris's Unrealistic Wants

1. Burberry Clear Coat
This cape is flawless! I have wanted a cape for a long time and this clear one is very cool.

2. Christopher Kane Shirt

I have a weird reason for wanting this. I kinda want to poke a hole into the collar and have the gel spill all over the shirt because I think it would make the shirt cooler, even though it would ruin it.

3. Carven Print Sweater

I am obsessed with Carven and I really like this gargoyle sweater, even though gargoyles scare me.

4. Burberry Creeper Shoes
I like these because Miroslava Duma wears them, haha. If I had creeper heels, I could match Daniel

5. Alexander Wang Metallic Bag

This is the first Alexander Wang bag I have loved. It looks like a rocket ship skyrocketing into space with furry things instead of flames.

Thank You & Leather Palms

Happy Thanksgiving to all you American fashion plates! We're risking cheesiness, but we wanted to thank all of you who read our blog! It's great getting to know you through comments or twitter @replies. Hopefully you're having a great day, even if you read this two days late (holiday and sales!). Seriously let us know how your Black Friday went in the comments after you go shopping, we'd love to read some stories.
Speaking of shopping stories, here's a little recap on our Versace for H&M experience. We made the mistake of getting to the line a little too close to opening time, but in actuality there weren't that many people there. However, those who were bought bags and bags of stuff, leaving us with nothing to really buy. From that moment on, it was as if everything was a sign from the heavens. (Signs from the heavens mean you must take advantage of anything you get your hands on, and buy it—or trade it for something you want.) Grabbing the last black coat on the rack was almost a holy experience, considering the entire men's collection was wiped out by the time we got in the store. Crazy.
Some group of people had the brilliant idea of getting pieces from the fitting room and holding on to them until they left the store. Luckily, we got to grab the palm tree skirt from them when they came to the waiting line to pass out the pieces they didn't buy. Considering that a sign from the heavens, obviously.
P.S. Daniel here. Suffering from pink-suit-sadness. Didn't even get to see it through a window, so if anyone wants to cure my pain and return one to the San Diego Fashion Valley H&M, I'd love that. hahaha.

Da Vinci

5.11.11

Fixed the blog's layout up a little bit. You probably won't notice a big difference but everything is a bit more aligned properly and the comment link is more attractive and junk. We added an about us page that links to a page with all of our Everybody Is Ugly articles, so if you wanted to find one quickly or something, they're there. There's also cool previous/next links on the posts so you can scroll through easily! Seriously, click them. They're so magical! Haha. By the way, thanks for all of the positive feedback on the videos/Halloween post!

DANIEL: Iris is wearing this dark blue amazing, thick neoprene-ish polyester shirt from H&M and there's an amazing back-story to it. We were in NY at H&M with Heather and both Iris and I go up to the cashier at the same time and while I'm paying I look over to her and see the price on her screen and I think, "Did you take something out?" She's like, "no." So I'm just thinking, "why is your price, like half off of what you should be paying?" While walking out of the store, Iris checks her receipt and notices that the guy didn't charge her for basically the only piece of clothing she had (the rest were jewelry). Free shirt? What? Why didn't that happen to me! I hope nobody is reading this and reports her, hahaha. Her blue skirt is thrifted and matches perfectly with the shirt, even though she originally hesitated to wear them together. She said they were "too adult-ish." As you probably already know, Iris likes looking like a little girl all the time. haha.
I'm wearing this gigantic red t-shrit and some equally large black trousers. I think I need these pants in every single color. The entire look is about two dance moves away from a XL-sports jersey-90s-boyband look but the necklace, tote bag, creepers and slicked hair take that away a little. I'm also kind of reminded of a certain dance party in a smart house. So high fashun. I love this necklace, even though I wish it was a little shorter. I saw one kind of like it in Topman in New York and it was $70 for plastic beads, I died in the bad way. Thank you H&M for giving me my dreams for $12.75 instead.

Iris: H&M shirt and plastic tote, Thrifted skirt, Patent loafers, White beaded bracelet
Daniel: Nautica t-shirt, American Apparel tote, Thrifted pants, Demonia creepers, F21 + H&M jewlery
