STUDY 3: The Black Dress

20.4.13

Inspiration for the warmth. Same, and different. It's always a little challenge to actually give up thicker fabrics and longer lengths once Spring rolls around, but this Pre-Fall 2008 collection of black dresses from Balenciaga convinces us we're ready. They seem easy and special, repetitively unboring.

Sleeping is my favorite activity even though I guess you couldn't really call it active, but whatever. Lazy layers seem right. Like sweatshirts with t-shirts, and sandals and track pants. Sorta pajama, more lounge. Robe coats sound like such a good idea, I never bother with closures anyway and a little off the shoulder action never hurt nobody.

After building on the foundations of the house, Raf started planting his garden at Dior. The models ascended into the greenery from the subway underground and I'm gonna mug the one with the cropped embellished vest bc i need dat.

COLLAGE BY IRIS / TEXT BY DANIEL

dear miuccia, if this set isn't in the campaign i will literally cut you.*

geeks are so over but everything was 2005 and i was livin' for it.

boxy boxy everything and boyishly unkempt, did you see those long-waisted narrow trousers?

harsh looks 2012. nonchalant vibes 2013.

those colors.

*read: cry in my room by myself, don't sue me.

Bras & Blues

I'm really into ties, circles, and midriffs right now (currently in the market for a sports bra to layer over dresses and collared shirts). BALENCIAGA S/S 13 // MARGARET HOWELL F/W 2013 MENSWEAR //  J.W ANDERSON F/W 2013 MENSWEAR // MINIMALIST HOUSE IN A CORUÑA // CASA DOS CUBOS

IRIS above

I don't wear as much color anymore other than black and if I do wear color its typically gray, white, blue, and mustard. I realized I only wear those colors, after purging my closet this year. I became obsessed with androgynous all black outfits and began to strip down all accessories because I didn't like the feeling of having too much stuff on. I'm even thinking about eliminating purses out of my life and just keep everything in my pocket or wallet. I also started to experiment with eye make up and have been wanting eyeshadows/eyeliners of all colors; my favorites have been orange, blue, and white but I'm excited to try more next year.

DANIEL below

I completely changed purchasing habits this year and I hope that the quality over quantity approach continues through next year. I threw out half my closet because I've been such a hoarder and it was kinda awesome not having the remnants of $5 sales on lamé leggings and bedazzled shirts still in there from four years ago oh my god. (I don't want to talk about it.) Basically this year was narrowing down my closet to what I know I'll actually use. No prints, more black, substantial fabrics, and clothes that hovered instead of clung to the body proved to be the most important requirements for my style this year, and probably next.

Stella McCartney FW 12

10.9.12

For the past few weeks I have been working on a school project about Stella McCartney. After finally completing it, I realized how much I loved her Fall 2012 collection (tears at  me not adding it on my Fall 2012 Inspiration collage). The ads with Natalia Vodianova by Mert & Marcus is probably one of my most favorite campaigns this season so I incorporated it into the look of my collage.

Fatigues

11.8.12

After seeing the street style of the newest Jil Sander boy, we've reignited a need for camouflage print. Fashion is surprisingly filled with inspiration. Image sources below.

School Daze

1.8.12

From V78 The Youthquake Issue. The image above, and the editorial it's part of, has been haunting me since I've seen it. The styling juxtaposes incredibly textural pieces with simple, basic school sweatshirts and sports uniforms. The voluminous shape of the already oversized clothing looks supernatural on regular school kids, half the size of an amazonian height model. The mixture is really inspiring.

Photographer Focus: Willy Vanderperre

26.7.12

A large part of what we find interesting and thought provoking in fashion can be attributed to editorial photography and we've done a couple of editorial spotlights now and then on this blog, but we wanted to expand that interest into something a bit deeper and focus on some of our favorite photographers.  (Our tumblr is basically an editorial graveyard.) For this inaugural post, we're featuring a photographer whose work inspires us endlessly, Willy Vanderperre. Hailing from Belgium, he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. His theatrical Caravaggio-esque use of lighting and dramatic, emotional take on color and the body. is what mainly draws us to his work. While his images are often—but not always—minimal, there's a stark statement-making style about them. Always strong, even when quiet. It also helps that his frequent collaborators are  some of our favorites in the fashion industry: designer Raf Simons, stylists Olivier Rizzo and Panos Yiapanis,  makeup artist Peter Phillips, and models Natasha Poly, Mariacarla Boscono and Clement Chabernaud. His  photographs' gritty intimate drama appears in major fashion publications such as Self Service, i-D, L'Uomo Vogue, Arena Homme Plus, V, among others and has captured the campaigns of Jil Sander, Prada, and Dior Homme. ■

Style Inspiration: Miroslava Duma, Fashion Writer

16.7.12

Miroslava Duma's outfits have always been my favorite to admire during Fashion Weeks. I never realized how pint-sized she really is until this year, which makes me love her even more. It makes me feel like I can relate to her... except I'm not wearing Balenciaga or Proenza Schouler, haha. The first time I encountered a photo of Miroslava was back in 2009 on CitizenCouture, and I have been following her sartorial choices ever since! Her flawless usage of color and interesting patterns make me cry tears of joy. We both share a love for over sized chunky jewelry and super short hemlines, so I look to her outfits for silhouette and accessory inspiration. In her interview with Fashionista.com, she explained how she has to 100% alter all her clothing to fit her small frame or wear children's clothing because everything is too big for her. I wish I could somehow be lucky enough to inherit her closet! I also love how Mira and her street style friends aren't scared to have fun and match outfits while supporting each other's designs.

Here are some more recent outfits of hers to check out! 1 2 3 4

Style Inspiration: Ethan James

14.2.12

Ethan James. FORD MODEL & PHOTOGRAPHER
If you visit our Tumblr regularly, you're most likely to see too many photos of him with ridiculous tags, haha. The first time I ever saw Ethan was in an issue of TeenVogue in 2010 for the prom issue, which sadly I cannot find! He popped up into my life again early 2011 when Daniel posted photos of him in our tumblr, but it was around July or August I became obsessed with him, haha. Both Daniel and I enjoy Ethan's modeling, photography and, most importantly for this post, his style. In his earlier years of modeling he mainly wore hats, and trendy rock influenced looks
Three years later, it's as if he overhauled his whole wardrobe to flawless outerwear and turtlenecks. Whenever you see any Ethan candid photo, he's usually wearing one or more familiar item that he has worn several times, like his red coat or leather jacket. His uniform dressing also features lots of turtlenecks and is the sole reason why I wear them now. He doesn't seem to wear that much color other than his usual palette which consist of black, blue, gray, and red. Back in December Ford Models Fashion did a "12 Days of Giving: Ethan James Green" with items Ethan picked himself. For more about his style, check out StyleLikeU's awesome video profiling his suitcase must haves.
