Haute Couture 2011

28.1.11

Alexis Mabille showed a couture show filled with dresses that duplicated each other in crisp white and dark color. The formula got tired after looking at so many repeats but if you took the time to appreciate the clothes for single pieces, they were really beautiful silhouettes and looks. The white versus color proves extremely relevant for Spring 2011's hyper-brights and all white minimalism. Sometimes the white wins out as the star of juxtaposition (the very left is one such example), other times the color. Throughout the show, both usually complemented each other in a way that both were equally beautiful and striking in their own realm. The question of which way to go in Spring 2011, color versus white, is given an answer in Mabille's couture, do both.

On the whiter side of Spring, Chanel's airy couture show showed a modern day high fashion Cinderella (complete with choker, bauble earrings, and glass-like beading). Lagerfeld put his girls in flats this time around, emphasizing the tip of the toe in transparent plastic backed shoes. His rebellion against the high fashion power woman is apparent in these soft and proper princesses. The looks on the far left and far right are our favorites, they are modern, chic, and feel special without looking too precious. While the 80+ looks of this couture show were stunningly detailed, sometimes it could get boring to look through the standardized Chanel formula of another variation on the same tweed look.
